5.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes North of Egypt’s Suez, No Casualties Reported

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck north of the Egyptian city of Suez early Monday, prompting tremors that were felt across several parts of the country. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

According to Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), the earthquake occurred shortly after 3:00 a.m. local time, with its epicentre located about 38 kilometres north of Suez. The quake was recorded at a depth of around 10 kilometres.

Tremors felt across the region

Residents in Cairo, Suez and several surrounding governorates reported feeling the tremor, with many taking to social media to describe brief shaking during the early hours of the morning. Some reports also indicated that the earthquake was felt in parts of neighbouring countries, although no significant impact was immediately reported.

No damage or injuries

Egyptian authorities said emergency teams were monitoring the situation and had received no reports of injuries or damage to buildings or infrastructure following the earthquake. The Egyptian Red Crescent also confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Seismically active region

Egypt experiences occasional earthquakes due to its proximity to several active fault systems, including those associated with the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea Rift. While most tremors are minor, authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and advise residents to follow official guidance during earthquake events.
